The Tragedy of Dane Riley by Kat Spears


 Dane Riley's struggling. He's struggling with the fact that his died has died of cancer. He's struggling with his complicated feelings for the beautiful girl who lives next door. He's struggling with his mom's new, all-too-soon relationship with his dad's former law partner. He's struggling to find a meaning to life. 

Dane's mom takes him to see a therapist in the hopes of helping Dane talk through all that's going on in his head, but talking about things only brings more to the surface. He's normal for feeling so much, isn't he? Or does he feel so much that he just might not be able to handle it?

This is a story that every high schooler should read. Heck, this is a story that anyone who has ever felt like the world was too much, or too little, should read. Dane experience loss, love, pain, healing, and a whole lot of unknowns in this poignant book. The title, The Tragedy of Dane Riley, begs the questions: Is Dane Riley's life a tragedy? and also how can it be seen as anything but? I think your answers will surprise you.

The Cousins by Karen McManus

  Karen McManus is one of my favorite authors. She writes awesome mystery/thrillers that are full of twists and turns. Her debut novel, One of Us is Lying is still by far her best (think the 80's movie The Breakfast Club only with a murder). That book has a sequel titled Two Can Keep a Secret, which is also very good.  In her third novel, which is completely separate from her first two, the readers sees three cousins get called to their grandmother's island home for summer jobs. They have no idea why they have been summoned because, after all, their grandmother disowned their parents years ago. Each cousin receives a note that says "You know what you did"which adds to the oddity of why they are there. Upon arrival, it quickly becomes clear that their grandmother has no idea they were even invited. Thus, the three cousins, who haven't seen each other in years, join up to figure out just what the heck is going on. The secrets the three cousins begin to dig up leads

The Violent Season by Sara Walters
