New America Awakenings by Tyler Davis

 


This is one of the best books I have recently read! Thank you to NetGalley for granting me a version to blog about! New America Awakenings is set in an America that is deeply divided, literally. After a civil war, America has been divided into different Projects based on race and religion. What was billed as a resettlement meant to be a new beginning was clearly a power grab meant to keep the people down and fighting amongst themselves. The President is crooked and the Project Colt Jenkins lives in is run by a power-hungry demon of a woman named Katherine. 

Colt and his family, his parents and his beloved little sister Eliza, are used to being hungry and don't get startled when gun shots or explosions are heard or felt. They know the way they are being forced to live isn't right, but who has the power to do anything about it. If you speak up, you are labeled an "Enemy of the Peace" and summarily executed in a guillotine. One day after a bombing, Colt goes to secure blankets and a tarp to secure a blown out window. When his father is wrongly accused of stealing it, Colt decides he has had enough of the abuse by those in power and decides to stand up for the truth. His punishment is brutal and life-threatening. Afterwards, Colt is driven to put an end to the tyranny that New Bethlehem has suffered under for far too long.

This book is fast paced, action packed, and scarily (potentially) plausible. Obviously, since the cover says "Book One" there is obviously going to be a sequel. I can not wait!!!!! Loved every page of this one!

The Cousins by Karen McManus

  Karen McManus is one of my favorite authors. She writes awesome mystery/thrillers that are full of twists and turns. Her debut novel, One of Us is Lying is still by far her best (think the 80's movie The Breakfast Club only with a murder). That book has a sequel titled Two Can Keep a Secret, which is also very good.  In her third novel, which is completely separate from her first two, the readers sees three cousins get called to their grandmother's island home for summer jobs. They have no idea why they have been summoned because, after all, their grandmother disowned their parents years ago. Each cousin receives a note that says "You know what you did"which adds to the oddity of why they are there. Upon arrival, it quickly becomes clear that their grandmother has no idea they were even invited. Thus, the three cousins, who haven't seen each other in years, join up to figure out just what the heck is going on. The secrets the three cousins begin to dig up leads

The Violent Season by Sara Walters

  This book is crazy! In a small town that is seemingly beset by violence every November, Wyatt begins to question just what is really behind all of these deaths. Upon stumbling on her mother's murdered body, and seeing some townsfolk die and classmates kill themselves, Wyatt is convinced there is a sickness afflicting the town. Wyatt also worries this sickness is starting to affect her boyfriend Cash, who seems to genuinely want to kill their classmate, Porter. Once Wyatt and Porter become partners for a class project, Wyatt's attention (and affection) is split between the two and she becomes more and more concerned that something terrible is going to happen to someone close to her and she might be in the most danger of anyone!
